Why Apologetics Matter

This Page is Under Construction still. ;)

"
Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature."
(1 Corinthians 14:20, NKJV)

We live in an era where technology is accelerating at a quicker pace than ever before. Our world is changing and rapidly. However, humans don’t change much. We are still thoughtful beings with thoughtful questions, wanting thoughtful answers.

Three worldviews dominate American thinking right now.
  1. Christianity            2. Naturalism          3. Postmodern Relativism
I’ll define these later on for those of you unfamiliar with them. However, these worldviews have reshaped our culture and people are asking more questions than ever before. Media is being put out all the time attacking the Christian faith. Do we simply ignore it? How will we respond?

Truth is, many Christians have great difficulty in defending their faith when presented with difficult questions. They often will fall back on personal experience or “blind faith.” This is arbitrary and often doesn’t do much to convince the questioner. I'm not discounting personal experience. I believe it can be real evidence for you. But it doesn't help outsiders too much to say, "I know God is real because I feel Him."

“So, I should learn Apologetics to debate?” Not necessarily. I would say that’s definitely the wrong attitude to approach apologetics with. Sure, it will help you defend your faith. But it isn’t about memorizing answers to particular questions. You should come to apologetics because you want to increase and deepen your own understanding and knowledge. By having more knowledge and understanding, it follows that you’ll be better prepared to answer when your faith is challenged. Another thing that many need to remember is to stay humble. Your answer may be rational and helpful, but if your attitude is haughty, it won’t be well received. In fact, it's often detrimental.

“God saves, apologetics don’t.” This is true. However, we have real intellectual questions that build walls and by overcoming these challenges we can make someone more receptive to hearing the gospel message. At the very least, we can help them understand why Christianity is rational and how it’s different from other religions.
